Details of the steel and timber mezzanine floor
As this mezzanine floor is for public use we decided on the much wider, 1.8m, steel staircase for easy flow of pedestrian traffic, as well as a 35 degree angle with a 300mm tread depth for an easier, more comfortable step. We had to put in extra bracing under the staircase in order to stabilize it due to its length and weight. We used our standard steel hand and knee rail and then filled in the larger spaces with tensioned stainless steel cables on the staircase as well as on the mezzanine.
This steel structure consists of steel square tube columns which are fixed to the concrete floor with sleeve anchors, steel I-beam bearers which are bolted to the columns and galvanized steel lip channel joists which are bolted to the I-beams. Against the back wall we bolted flat bar directly to the wall onto which the joists are fixed which eliminated the use of more columns and at the same time anchors the entire deck. The timber shutter ply boards are fixed to the joists with self-drilling screws and the hand rail stanchions are bolted through the timber and main steel I-beams for extra rigidity. This steel and timber mezzanine deck was designed for light to medium weight storage at 350 kg’s/square meter.
